SchoolTutoring Academy Reviews the Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

Getting involved in extracurricular activities is a wise choice at any age. They can help a student to develop life-long skills in work, social relationships and other areas that will allow them to excel in whatever area of education or career that they wish to follow.

Time Management
One of the most important benefits of extracurricular activities is time management. This is an important skill to have no matter what age you are or where you are in life. By teaching this at a young age it allows for greater success later in life. Extracurricular activities force students to prioritize their activities and use their time wisely. Most activities emphasize the significance of time and how valuable it is. For example in many sporting events time is all that matters, the winner and the runner-up may only differ in time by milliseconds. This emphasis transfers to other life activities and makes the student act more efficiently without losing any of their drive or accuracy. Participating in several activities also teaches a child how to juggle homework, school, family and after-school activities. This becomes more important the older the student gets. The further into their education they are, the more homework they will have and the more extracurricular activities they will want to participate in. By getting the students involved at a younger age they will be able to adapt to this extra load more easily since they have already started to develop the good time management skills needed to succeed in both education and extracurriculars. This is a skill that will stay with them and allow them to succeed for the rest of their lives.

Teaching Life-Long Skills
Extracurricular activities allow students to be around peers with similar interests and allow them to be themselves in an environment that they are comfortable. This allows for social development where the student can learn to interact and get along with members of their group or team. It teaches skills such as conflict resolution, team work and cooperation. All of these skills become very important later in education and in life. They are able to find skills that they are good at which will raise their confidences, and instill a desire to try new things and find other skills that they are good at. In most cases the skills that develop from extracurricular activities lead to a career choice.

Health Benefits
Many extracurricular activities, including sports, promote healthy lifestyle choices that will stay with a child throughout their life. These include exercising and eating properly to maintain good strength and fitness in order to be competitive in their activity of choice. By instilling the importance of exercise at a young age, they are more likely to grow into a healthy, well informed adult. Extracurricular activities also provide a healthy way for students to deal with stress. They feel less stressed when participating in something that know they are good at and something that they want to do. Whether it be playing soccer or running for student council, when a child likes what they are doing it relieves the stress of other factors in their lives and allows them to enjoy themselves. Even the stress of school and homework is lessened by the fact that they can spend some time each day doing something that they enjoy and have volunteered to do.

Further Education
If you’re considering College or University as a possibility then extracurricular activities are your friend. Colleges and Universities don’t only look at grades, but also extracurricular activities in order to ensure that the students they admit to their programs are well rounded individuals that will be able to strive in the post-secondary environment. The types of extracurricular activities that a student is involved in tells the admissions office a lot about the student and their personality. Post- secondary institutions believe that extracurricular activities allow students to grow and to obtain the skills that will help them to be more successful in their education as well as in their career path.
